What is Hand Safety in construction?
Hand safety means identifying and controlling anything that could injure the hands, fingers or wrists. Immediate hazards include cutting edges, points, hot surfaces, moving machinery, dropped materials, pinch points and stored energy. Health hazards include wet cement, resins, solvents, prolonged wet work, repeated movements and vibration from powered tools.
The correct control depends on the task. A glove that protects against an abrasive material may not resist a chemical or sharp edge. Gloves can also create an entanglement risk around rotating equipment. Hand protection must therefore be selected as part of the overall safe system, not treated as a universal solution.
Why it matters on UK construction sites
A momentary loss of control can cause a cut, puncture, crush injury, fracture, burn or amputation. Contact with hazardous products may cause chemical burns or dermatitis. Repeated exposure to vibration can damage the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints of the hand and arm.
Even a less severe injury can affect grip, dexterity and the ability to complete ordinary tasks. It may interrupt work, damage materials or create another hazard if a worker drops a tool or loses control of a load. The priority is to remove the need for hands to enter the danger area wherever reasonably practicable.
Who is exposed and how
Carpenters, steel fixers, groundworkers, bricklayers, roofers, dryliners, formwork teams and mechanical and electrical trades regularly handle sharp materials or use cutting and drilling equipment. Concrete workers may contact wet cement, while painters, floor layers and finishing trades may use adhesives, resins, cleaners or solvents.
Plant operators, slingers, signallers, delivery drivers and workers receiving loads can be exposed at landing and alignment points. Maintenance workers face additional risk during adjustment, blade changes, cleaning or unblocking. Colleagues nearby may also be affected if a tool slips, material moves or a load is released unexpectedly.

Hand hazards should be reviewed wherever people hold, guide, cut, clean or position equipment and materials, including:
- Cutting and trimming: opening packaging or cutting insulation, membranes, cable, plasterboard and other materials with knives, saws or snips.
- Using powered tools: operating drills, grinders, breakers, disc cutters, sanders and other hand-held or hand-guided equipment.
- Handling materials: moving sheet metal, reinforcement, broken masonry, timber, glazing, cable tray or components with unfinished edges.
- Landing and positioning: guiding loads, aligning prefabricated items, placing blocks or adjusting components around pinch and crush points.
- Wet and chemical work: handling wet cement, resins, sealants, adhesives, cleaning products and contaminated tools.

Common failure modes
Hand injuries often occur when a routine task changes or someone places a hand into a danger area to save time.
- Hands used for alignment: fingers are placed between a component and its support instead of using a suitable positioning aid.
- Unexpected movement: a load, tool, door, panel or stored component shifts because it was not secured before contact.
- Unsafe intervention: a blockage, jam or adjustment is approached before the equipment is isolated and stored energy is controlled.

How incidents happen and how to prevent them
An incident may begin when a worker steadies a moving item, reaches around a guard or holds material close to a cutting point. The tool, load or component moves further or faster than expected. There may be no time to withdraw the hand, particularly where another person controls the movement.
Prevention starts by separating hands from the hazard. Use guards, clamps, work-holding devices, handles and suitable positioning tools. Secure materials before cutting and isolate equipment before cleaning, adjustment or unblocking. Where people work together, agree commands and confirm that everyone is clear before movement begins.
⚠️ Hypothetical site example: A steel panel is being positioned onto supports using mechanical assistance. A worker places a hand between the panel and support to correct its alignment. The panel moves and traps the fingers. The task should instead use a planned landing area, clear signals and suitable hands-free positioning aids, with nobody placing any part of the body inside the crush zone.
When risk increases
Risk increases during lifting and landing operations, maintenance, blade changes, unblocking and testing after repairs. It also rises when guards are temporarily removed, materials have sharp unfinished edges or several trades work around the same equipment or access route.
Cold, rain, mud and contamination can reduce grip and dexterity. Poor lighting can hide edges and pinch points. Review the task when tools, materials, gloves, staffing or work methods change, and during overtime, production pressure or repeated use of vibrating equipment.
UK regulations and compliance
In Great Britain, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require work equipment to be suitable, maintained and accompanied by appropriate protective measures. Dangerous parts must be prevented from causing injury, with suitable information, instruction and training provided for use of the equipment.
Where products such as wet cement, resins, adhesives, cleaners or solvents may contact the skin, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 require exposure to be assessed and adequately controlled. The COSHH assessment should inform the handling method, hygiene arrangements, protective equipment and any required health surveillance.
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 require employers to assess and control health risks from vibration. Construction tasks involving breakers, grinders, drills, scabblers and similar equipment may expose the hands and arms.
HSE's Personal protective equipment at work guidance explains the duties under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, as amended in 2022. Practical controls that make the difference
Remove the need for close hand contact where reasonably practicable. Order materials with finished edges, use pre-cut components, change the work sequence or use mechanical handling. Provide clamps, vices, push tools, handles and positioning aids so hands can remain outside cutting, trapping and impact areas.
Keep guards and protective devices fitted and effective. Equipment must be stopped and suitably isolated before maintenance, cleaning, adjustment or unblocking. Control pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, gravitational and mechanical energy so a part cannot move unexpectedly while someone is working on it.
Use the correct cutting tool on a stable work surface. Secure the material, keep the supporting hand away from the cutting path and store blades safely when not in use. Replace damaged tools and unsuitable accessories rather than improvising.
Select gloves according to the task, substance, wearer and environment. Consider fit, grip, cut resistance, chemical compatibility, heat and the required dexterity. Replace damaged or contaminated gloves and prevent substances entering at the wrist. Do not wear gloves where they could be caught by rotating machinery.
Reduce vibration at source by changing the method, selecting suitable lower-vibration equipment and maintaining tools and accessories. Manage the duration and pattern of exposure and provide health surveillance where the risk assessment shows it is required. Workers should promptly report tingling, numbness, reduced grip, persistent pain, skin redness or cracking.

Do protective gloves make every hand task safe?
No. Gloves must suit the specific hazard and cannot replace guarding, isolation, work-holding equipment or a safer method. They may create an entanglement risk around some rotating machinery.
Can a worker clear a blockage after pressing the stop button?
